Welcome
Trinity Church is the oldest established parish in Staunton, Virginia and still one of the most active. Throughout our history, we have been at the center of life in Staunton. Sunday morning worship services include scripture-based, relevant preaching and, in the Episcopal tradition, communion. Our choir and organ accompany the 11:00 am service and the middle service (8:45 am) has an acoustic band and congregational singing. We have a vibrant Sunday school for children and adults, a neo-Gothic building with 12 Tiffany windows and a friendly atmosphere. Worship and prayer We provide different styles of worship and prayer. Sunday services are traditional Episopal services of Holy Eucharist (communion). During the week, we have simpler services of Morning and Evening Prayer and a Healing Prayer service on Wednesdays at 10:30 am. Centering Prayer (Sunday at 6:30 pm) and Mindfulness Meditation (Monday at 6:00 pm) offer different forms of contemplation and spiritual experience. The Taize (Tay-zay) service, held on the first Tuesday of each month (except summer) at 7:00 pm in the chapel is an ecumenical service of chanted songs, meditation and readings by candlelight. You are welcome at any or all of our services. What to Expect on Sunday Morning During most of the year Sunday begins early at Trinity Church with a 7:45 celebration of the Holy Eucharist (communion). An 8:45 Eucharist comes next, this one with contemporary music performed on piano, guitars, violin, and other instruments. This is our least formal service and one that includes more dialogue and conversation. At 10:00, Sunday school begins with classes for all ages including adults. The 11:00 o’clock Eucharist is accompanied by organ and choir. After each service, coffee is available in McCracken Hall. Children are welcome at all services and a nursery is available from 8:30 until after the late service. During the summer season, Sunday church is held at 8:00 and 10:00 am. Sunday School is not held during the summer. Mass on the Grass is on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 pm, an informal Eucharist service follwed by a potluck supper. As do Anglicans world-wide, each in their own language, Episcopalians worship from The Book of Common Prayer. Sunday morning services are Holy Eucharist (communion services). The first Eucharist was held by Jesus and is generally known as the Last Supper. The service consists of Bible readings, preaching, prayers, and the receiving of Holy Communion which all baptized Christians, including children, are invited to do. We have an occasional late afternoon Evensong featuring our choir that are often preceded by an organ concert. Come join us.Outreach to those in need We actively support outreach to those in need. Each weekday we serve lunch to anyone who stops by to eat. Our Noon Lunch Program is supported by many other churches and organizations in town as well as our parish. Since 2004 we have made annual mission trips to the Copan district of Honduras building churches and offering help for community projects. We support SACRA, the Staunton/Augusta Church Relief Association, a volunteer led and staffed group providing emergency help to families and individuals in need in Staunton and Augusta County. We host a variety of community groups, including the Newtown Neighborhood Association, Staunton Music Festival, and Alcoholics Anonymous. We hope you will introduce yourself to us, discover programs that interest you, and become part of Trinity Church. The Episcopal Church The Episcopal Church came to America with the first English Christian settlers to Jamestown, Virginia. They were Anglicans, members of the state religion of England. Since 1607, the Church has grown to represent 7,400 congregations in North America. It is part of the worldwide Anglican Communion that unites nearly 80 million people in 164 countries. The Episcopal Church uses The Book of Common Prayer to unify and organize worship. Joined in prayer, Episcopalians welcome people with different points of view and encourage open dialogue. Episcopalians share a Christian faith that honors the Bible, the traditions of the Church and God-given human reason. Episcopalians struggle with the same issues that trouble all people of faith: how to interpret an ancient faith for today, how to reach out effectively to those who are in need, and how to disagree with respect. Though the struggles at times seem to be driving us apart, the heart of the Church is a welcome for all and a tolerance for diversity that keeps old traditions growing to new light. Becoming a member of Trinity Church. A Community Center Trinity provides meeting and performance space for community groups. Staunton Music Festival uses our facility to hold rehearsals, pre-concert talks and concerts. Staunton Performing Arts Center has their Cabaret fundraisers here. Alcoholics Anonymous hosts four different meetings here each week. Meditation and Centering Prayer groups meet. See our calendar for a complete listing of events and meetings. The Episcopal Church welcomes you! |
