The Geometrical Window
The Geometrical Window, installed after February 1873, features predominant colors of red, yellow, blue and white. It is an excellent example of a nineteenth-century American stenciled window, possibly by the well-known Sharpe & Steele Company and the only remaining example at Trinity Church of this type of glass.
The window features eight circular medallions with red fields and deep blue borders. The top medallion features a golden crown. The second contains a leafy cross design, which may be a stylized Passion flower. The third contains the sacred monogram IHS – the first three letters of Jesus in Greek. The fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth medallions match the second one. The fifth medallion features a plain gold Greek cross. The tips of the crossbars display a trefoil design. Many techniques were used to lay on the paint, including positive and negative stencils and hand-painted lines. Enamel paints can be seen in the green portions of the central medallions.
