The Beloved Physician, the Saint Luke Window

St. Luke, one of the four evangelists, was the author of the third Gospel of the New Testament and possibly also the book of Acts. St. Paul tells us that Luke was a physician by profession; Christian legend tells us that he was also an artist who painted the first portrait of the Madonna and Child.

St. Luke stands on a stone in a bountiful field of white lilies, symbolic of the purity of Christ and the Virgin Mary. He holds in one hand a quill pen and in the other a book (perhaps his Gospel) and has stopped writing for a thoughtful moment, as if responding to divine inspiration.
